What is the Texas Century Club?

Blackburnian Warbler at Anahuac National Wildlife Refuge

The Texas Century Club is a challenge sponsored by the Texas Ornithological Society to its members to record 100 species of birds in 100 Texas counties. Texas is big (254 counties) and most birders probably spend the majority of their time in less than 20 Texas counties. This is just under 8% of Texas counties!.

To stimulate the exploration of the birdlife in the other 92% of Texas counties The Texas Century Club was created. The idea is to get birders to record the birds in more than the traditional hot spots. To "bird your own patch". To explore the road less traveled.

There are several levels of award; 5, 10, 25, 50 and 75 counties before you reach the ultimate goal of 100 species in 100 counties. The five county award level is open to all birders. The higher levels of awards are open only to Texas Ornithological Society Members

Achieving 100 counties will take hard work and dedication, but its going to be fun. You'll find all birds become important to you, no more "trash birds". You'll see more and explore more of the state than you ever dreamed.

Join me, it's going to be fun!

How Many Birds Have been Reported in Each County?

All County Totals Updated Feb 6, 2011 (Click on Read More below). Partial update 12/15/11

eBird is just about the only source of recent consolidated records available to everyone.  A record 7,621 complete checklists were submitted in Texas to ebird in April, 2011. eBird also does a very good job of keeping your personal county records.

Below are 3 maps of Texas colored by number of species reported to Ebird. Counties in Blue have 200+ species reported. Counties in Green have 100-199 species reported. Counties in   Yellow have 25-99 species reported. Counties in White have 0-24 species reported.

Most and Least Birded Counties PDF Print E-mail

What are the most birded counties in Texas?

Update Oct 11, 2009-JB (Partial update 12/15/11)

Thirty (as shown above as of 10/11/09) counties have more than 300 species reported to ebird; Aransas, Bell, Bexar, Brazoria, Brewster, Calhoun, Cameron, Chambers, Dallas, El Paso, Fort Bend, Galveston, Harris, Hidalgo, Hunt, Jeff Davis, Jefferson, Kenedy, Kleberg, Nueces, Rains, Randall, Refugio, San Patricio, Starr, Tarrant, Travis, Uvalde, Van Zandt, Williamson

What are the least birded counties in Texas?

(as of 11/13/12) Glasscock County has the fewest (78) species reported to ebird

However there are still THREE (as of 11/13/12) counties with fewer than 100 species reported: Crane (91), Dawson (111), Gaines (113), Glasscock (78), Irion (119), Reagan (100), Sterling (109), Upton (96), Winkler (105)

What's Possible?

I think that's a very interesting question. I've no doubt that 100 species is possible in every county. 251(upd11/13/12) counties have more than 100 species reported already. Is 200 possible in all counties? 94 (upd 10/11/09) counties already have more than 200 species reported.

Prairies and Pineywoods Wildlife Trail East MapSo you have 100 species in your home county and a few surrounding ones. You've birded the Upper Texas Coast, the Coastal Bend, and the Rio Grande Valley. You done the Davis Mountains and Big Bend National Park. Now what? You still need a lot of counties to reach that goal of 100 counties.

Texas Parks and Wildlife's Great Texas Wildlife Trails (GTWT) offer you a guide to hundreds of birding sites in 80% of the state.
